Dental Fillings

What are Dental Fillings?

Dental fillings are one of the most common procedures done in most dental offices. The procedure is necessary if decay is found in one or more of your teeth. Cavities can eventually get worse, leading to the need for a root canal or extraction. Before it gets to this point, the decay can be removed and a filling put into its place.

Why are Dental Fillings necessary?

The most common reason for needing a filling is because you have a cavity. Cavities often form because of inadequate brushing and flossing and other factors. If left untreated, the cavity can continue to get worse and eventually cause the need for either a root canal or extraction. You may be considering a filling if you already have metal ones that you’d like to replace with composite resin.

What makes you a good candidate for a Dental Filling?

Most patients who need a filling can safely have the procedure done. We will perform an exam and take x-rays to determine if a filling is necessary. If more than one filling is needed, we can do this at the same appointment if they’re in the same area. By filling a decayed tooth, you’re preventing the decay from getting worse and preserving your tooth.

What happens during the Dental Filling procedure?

We first administer a local anesthetic to numb the area being treated. The decay is then removed from the tooth and the small hole prepared for the filling material. Next, we place the composite resin into the small hole and smooth it into place. We cure the material with a specialized light and smooth the filling down a second time. You will enjoy a filling that lasts for many years without needing replacement or repair. We can help to answer any questions you might have regarding this procedure and what you can expect with it.
